Nintendo’s notorious flop, the Virtual Boy, has had something of an unlikely renaissance over the past couple of years, with games from the console making their way to the Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics collection, as we have reported previously.
And now, thanks to the new, free open-source Virtual Boy emulator VBoy Color, you can even play Virtual Boy games in color, rather than an in its native red and black palette.
With VBoy Color, you can play Virtual Boy games on Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and Android phones, tablets, and handhelds. VBoy Color can also run Virtual Boy games in both color and 3D on Meta Quest headsets.
VBoy Color’s features include: four different colorization options; button mapping; and achievements with RetroAchivements.
You can download VBoy Color now, via GitHub.
A note of caution for those of you who are AI-averse, Claude is credited in the list of contributors who made VBoy Color.
And you will, of course, need to supply your own Virtual Boy ROMs, and of course, if you don’t have any Virtual Boy ROMs, you can always enjoy Virtual Boy games in their red and black monochromatic glory on Switch Online, including, as we have reported previously, two previously unreleased games in the forms of Zero-Racers and D-Hopper.
