Air Combat 22 has been announced as this week’s Arcade Archives title.
This week’s release is a little different from usual Arcade Archives releases, however, as it will be released on five platforms. These will be Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 as usual but will also include Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Th reason for the additional formats is that Air Combat 22 is being released simultaneously part of both the Arcade Archives line and as part of the Arcade Archives 2 line (which recently saw the release of Ridge Racer, on which we previously reported).
Remarkably, the Arcade Archives/Arcade Archives 2 release of Air Combat 22 will be the first time the game has been released for home formats, despite the game flying into arcades some 30 years ago, way back in 1995.
Air Combat 22 is a sequel to Namco’s 1993 title Air Combat, and despite its name, it is not the 22nd entry in the series, with the titular “22” referring to Namco System Super 22, the 32-bit arcade system on which the game ran.
Released by Namco in 1995, Air Combat 22 is a 3D flight shooter, and the Arcade Archives version includes several additional modes of play, including high score mode, caravan mode, time attack mode, and network mode.
