There are some games for which a 2026 modern remake isn’t unexpected, like, say, the Ocarina of Time remake, on which we reported earlier this week, but we certainly didn’t have the 1984 8-bit home computer platform game Automania on our 2026 remake bingo card! However, Automania Remastered will indeed be driving its way onto Steam this August from developer MegaVision Software and publisher Alternative Software Ltd.
If you’re unfamiliar with Automania, as you probably will be, unless you’re of a certain age and from the UK, the game is a single-screen platformer that introduced the character of Wally Week, who, in his game debut, is working in an unusually hazardous car manufacturing plant.
Automania was originally published by the long-defunct software house Mikro-Gen, who released the game in 1984 on the 8-bit ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 home computers. Wally Week would go on to star in three further 8-bit games published by Mikro-Gen: Pyjamarama was released that same year, with Everyone’s a Wally, and Wally Week’s final outing, Herbert’s Dummy Run both following in 1985.
Automania Remastered will give players the option to play the game in its original 16-color ZX Spectrum mode, or in a new enhanced mode.
So who knows, if Automania Remastered is a success, we might well get to see more of Wally Week in Pyjamarama Remastered, everyone’s a Wally Remastered, and Herbert’s Dummy Run Remastered. But for now, at least you can wishlist Automania Remastered on Steam.
