Batman Returns in Development for Atari 2600

Batman Returns was Tim Burton’s 1992 sequel to his smash-hit 1989 Batman movie, and as you might expect for a huge blockbuster movie at that time, it spawned a whole slew of licensed video games on formats such as Game Gear, Master System, Genesis, Amiga, PC, and even Sega CD. But the film arrived too late to receive a game for Atari 2600, which was only officially discontinued in 1992, but it certainly wasn’t receiving any major new releases at that point, with the final North American releases for the console being a year earlier in 1991 with the games Ikari Warriors, MotoRodeo, Sentinel, and Xenophobe. While the Atari 2600 did limp on for another year in Europe, the only game released for the console in Europe in 1992 was Acid Drop, so clearly no Batman Returns game would have been released for Atari 2600 in 1992!

Despite critical acclaim, the Batman Returns movie came nowhere near the stratospheric commercial success of its predecessor, putting an end to Tim Burton-directed Batman movies, but the movie certainly has its fans, and is fondly remembered by many.

Now, some 33 years after its release, a homebrew coder is now creating a fan game based on the Batman Returns movie for Atari 2600. And a demo of the currently in-development  game is available to download now, as spotted on the AtariAge forum.
