Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido set to Blast out of the Console Archives Tomorrow

The rather unwieldy titled Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido has been confirmed at this week’s release in Hamster Corporation’s Console Archives line of emulated retro console titles, following last week’s release of Geki-Oh ShienRyu, on which we reported previously.

Hamster Corporation has certainly gone obscure again with this week’s Console Archives pick, which it describes as follows: “an action game where Kantaro, a fireworks thrower, travels to Edo to launch fireworks over the Sumida River, where his fiancée, Momoko-chan, is waiting, while fending off enemies along the way. Will Kantaro safely reach Edo and be able to launch fireworks over the Sumida River?”

Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido was originally released by Sunsoft on Famicom, in Japan only, in 1986.

Although a Japan-only release on its original format, Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido did belatedly head West when it was released as part of the Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection just two years ago, when the game was a mere 38 years old!

As the game was originally only released in Japan, all in-game text is in Japanese, but the user interface and manual are available in English.

The Console Archives version of Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido will be released tomorrow (June 4, 2026) on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, priced at $7.99 USD or local equivalent.
