Ghostbusters has a long history in the world of video games, and the latest Ghostbusters game to be released is a fan game in two different senses.
Not only is this new homebrew Ghostbusters game for Game Boy created by a fan, but it’s also about Ghostbusters fans, rather than the actual movie Ghostbusters themselves!
The game is based on the North Texas Ghostbusters, who are ”a civic organization dedicated to creating a better North Texas, through charitable works, entertainment, and collecting donations.”
According to the website Ghostbusters News, the game was created by North Texas Ghostbusters member member Zach Hidalgo, who built the game using GB Studio, which is a popular tool with Game Boy homebrew developers.
Zach Hidalgo said of his game, ““many of the sprites and objects are from other titles, primarily Pokémon Red and Pokémon Trading Card Game. I had only two months to develop it, during which I designed all the maps, wrote all the dialogue, and programmed everything myself.” The game has been designed to play similarly to HAL Laboratory’s Ghostbusters II NES game and its Game Boy adaptation.
While this new Ghostbusters game is firmly a fan project, the Ghostbusters franchise also has a very long history of official video games, dating back to 1984’s Ghostbusters for the 8-bit Commodore 64, which was released the same year as the original movie.
The Game Boy ROM for the North Texas Ghostbusters game can be downloaded from the Ghostbusters News website.
