The Golden Axe adult animated series will be streaming on Paramount Plus from September 16, the streamer has announced.
Based on Sega’s iconic 1989 coin-op, the Golden Axe adult animated series has been created by two creators with rather impressive credentials, when it comes to adult animated series: namely American Dad producer Joe Chandler and Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan.
The series will follow Ax Battler (Liam McIntyre, Tyris Flare (Lisa Gilroy) and Gilius Thunderhead (Matthew Rhys), as they take on, of course, the fearsome Death Adder, with the voice cast rounded off by Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib, and Carl Tartt as Chronos ‘Evil’ Lait. All crew and cast details were obtained from the show’s IMDB page.
TV series based on video games are hot property at the moment with Amazon Prime’s Fallout series and HBO’s last of Us adaptation proving particularly successful, but none have really delved into using games that are significantly “retro” as their source material, until now, when, almost inexplicably, 1989’s Golden Axe is getting its own adult animated series, here in 2026.
Golden Axe may not be the only Sega arcade classic to be hitting our screens in a non-interactive form, because as we reported previously, an OutRun movie is also in development, but who knows if it’ll ever cross the finish line and make it into movie theaters? For now, at least, we have the Golden Axe animated series to look forward to, which we’ll be able to watch on Paramount Plus from September 16, 2026.
