Handheld homebrewer creates Earthion GBC demo

Back in May, we were blown away by OutRun getting a GBC fan port. Now, handheld homebrewer Shane McCafferty has revealed that he has dabbled at bringing Earthion, Yuzu Koshiro’s brilliant shooter, to Nintendo’s classic device. McCafferty released a short video of Earthion’s ship flying through a level on X/Twitter. It included some excellent-looking parallax scrolling. It also showed the ship firing and other interesting elements, such as the HUD displaying score and other information.

McCafferty says that he created the mock-up in an afternoon and that it had been tested on real hardware. It goes to show that folks keep the homebrew scene alive with so many great creations. We hope to see more of this title develop, and the Earthion devs might want to get on board and see an official release alongside the upcoming Mega Drive version. Earthian has already been released to Steam and is receiving lots of praise, with an upcoming modern console port in the works as well.

A short while after releasing the video, McCafferty followed up with another tweet, stating. “The engagement I’m seeing from my throwaway Game Boy Earthion demo makes me very happy indeed. Not because of the tweet, but because it must mean that Earthion is doing pretty damn well. That’s really great news!”
