Killer Instinct Gold Punches its Way onto Switch Online

Killer Instinct Gold, the 1996 Nintendo 64 conversion of the Killer Instinct 2 arcade game, is now available to play for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.

Killer Instinct Gold was first released for Nintendo 64 in the USA in 1996, a year before receiving a PAL release in the UK and Australia in 1997.

The original 1994 SNES Killer Instinct game has been available to all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers as part of the service’s Super Nintendo library since February 2024, and now, its Nintendo 64 sequel is also available as part of the Nintendo 64 library to subscribers who also have the Expansion Pack upgrade.

Like its predecessor, and, indeed, its later Xbox successor, Killer Instinct Gold was developed by the legendary British development studio Rare.

Other games developed by the now Microsoft-owned Rare that are available on Nintendo Switch online are the N64 Bond FPS Goldeneye, the NES racing game R.C. Pro-Am and the NES isometric 3D platform game Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll.

Killer Instinct Gold was the second home release in the Killer Instinct series, following 1994’s SNES release of Killer Instinct. The series would not receive another installment until 2013’s Xbox One and Series X|S reboot, which is simply titled Killer Instinct.
