There must be something about Nintendo IP that makes it irresistible to homebrew coders and modders, who seem intent on creating experiences that do what Nintendon’t, as only today we reported on new fan games featuring Donkey Kong and Mario, and here’s a new fan hack for a game featuring another of Nintendo’s big hitters, in the form of a hack for the original NES Legend of Zelda game, titled “Z for 2”, that adds two-player co-op to the game, with the second player taking on the role of Link’s Shadow. In the new co-op version of the game either player can pick up and use items, and both players share health and resources.
The two player simultaneous co-op Z for 2 fan hack for The Legend of Zelda was developed by Deric Miller, and it was published on romhack.ing on August 11, 2026.
The Legend of Zelda was originally released by Nintendo on NES some 40 years ago, back in 1986, and as you no doubt already know, it has gone on to become one of the most highly acclaimed video game franchises of all time, and 40 years after that first game, each new entry in the series is still highly anticipated, and now, this new fan hack gives players the opportunity to enjoy the very first game in the series in a whole new way!
