MagMax has been announced as this week’s release in Hamster Corporation’s Console Archives line of emulated console titles for modern formats, following last week’s release of Rohga: Armor Force, on which we reported previously.
This week’s Console Archives title, MagMax, is a shoot ‘em up that was first released into arcades by Nichibutsu in 1985, before being converted to a number of 8-bit console and home computer formats the following year. The Console Archives release of MagMax is the NES (techinally Famicom) version of the game.
While the main game of the Console Archives version of MagMax is in Japanese, the manuals and option menus are also available in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
Hamster Corporation describes MagMax as: “a shooting game where you pilot a transformable mecha (MAGMAX) as the chosen hero, to rescue humanity from the domination of an alien computer known as Babylon,” adding that you: “travel between above ground and underground using warp holes, and defeat approaching enemies with energy beams.”
In addition to its one-player mode, MagMax also has a two-player mode, in which players take alternate turns.
The Console Archives version of MagMax will be released tomorrow (May 7th, 2026) on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, priced at $7.99 USD or local equivalent.
