Monster Chess is a forthcoming new dark fantasy themed chess game for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive that’s set to be published as a physical cartridge release via Broke Studios’ Homebrew Factory service.
Homebrew Factory describes Monster Chess as follows: “Monster Chess is a dark fantasy chess game for Sega Mega Drive / Genesis that turns the classic rules of chess into a gothic monster battle. Two armies clash on animated boards: cyber angel monsters against demon and skeleton creatures, with dramatic attacks, deaths, tactical feedback, FM music, and arcade-style presentation.”
Monster Chess required a minimum of 20 pre-orders to go into production, and at the time of writing, 22 pre-orders for the game have been placed, which means that production of Monster Chess is guaranteed. However, a maximum of 100 physical copies of Monster Chess will be made, and the pre-order campaign will run until July 10, 2026, so there’s still time to pre-order your copy of Monster Chess for your Sega Genesis or Sega Mega Drive console.
We reported previously on another of Homebrew Factory’s current pre-order campaigns: Bill the Dog for NES, and at the time of writing, Bill the Dog is still 15 copies short of its minimum pre-order quantity of 20 units, but you have until July 23rd 2026 to pre-order a copy for your NES.
