Outblast is a new retro-inspired shooter from developer Rhino Rock Studios, out now on Steam and VR. The game can be played on traditional flat screens as well as on VR headsets and has been described by the developer as a “challenging, immersive, and fast-paced sci-fi shooter”. Outblast began as a retro-inspired prototype, based on classic arcade shooters. Created by a team that was given an “open license and freedom to develop some fantastic ideas,” according to the developer.
In the game, players take control of interceptor C11-28 in a relentless sci-fi arcade shooter where razor-sharp reflexes, tactical anticipation, and a touch of luck stand between survival and total annihilation. A rogue viral intelligence known as Typhon has consumed the system, corrupting entire districts and pushing the planetary core of Perseon-6 toward collapse after all conventional defences failed. As the last line of resistance, players must boost through chaotic battle zones, unleash devastating firepower against endless infected waves, and confront legendary enemies across five deadly districts.
In a press statement, the developer said. “Both VR and flat screen offer the player a fantastic experience, but in a different way to enjoy the game. Having the benefit of going between more classic flatscreen nostalgia, and then seeing a retro-type game inside a headset and feeling the immersion, definitely gives Outblast great value to players. The replayability is also a major draw, giving players the chance to try both modes and compete for the top spots on the leaderboards.”
