Polaris has been released as this week’s title in Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives and Arcade Archives 2 lines of emulated coin-op titles, following last week’s Arcade archives-only release of Master of Syougi, on which we reported previously.
This week’s release, Polaris, is one of the oldest games to be released in the Arcade Archives lines to date, as it was originally released into arcades by Taito way back in 1980, some 46 years ago! Indeed, the last time Polaris received any sort of release was when it received home conversions for Atari’s 2600 console and Commodore’s Vic 20 home computer, some 43 years ago, way back in 1983.
Polaris is a shooting game that Hamster Corporation describes as follows: “Take command of a submarine and battle advancing enemy forces using missiles that can only be fired directly upward.
Navigate through a relentless onslaught from all directions—bombers in the sky, frigates patrolling the surface, and mines lurking on the seabed!”
The Arcade Archives version of Polaris was released on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 today, priced at $7.99 USD, or local equivalent, with the Arcade Archives 2 version seeing release on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, priced at $9.99 USD or local equivalent.
As usual, the Arcade Archives 2 version adds a new Time Attack mode to the game, and those who purchase the Arcade Archives version on Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4 can upgrade to the Arcade Archives 2 version on Nintendo Switch 2 or PlayStation 5 respectively for $2.99 USD.
