Pixel Art Platformer Prison City Gets Update And Physical Release

Publisher Retroware has just released a major free update for Prison City, its NES-inspired action platformer influenced by Power Blade and Shatterhand. The update introduces new mechanics, an alternate route to an existing stage, brand-new mini-games, and additional surprises for players. Additionally, Prison City is heading to physical formats, with PS5 and Switch editions launching via Limited Run Games in a pre-order campaign starting next week.

Prison City is a dystopian, action-packed side-scroller with tight mechanics and intricate level design. Battle Techno-Terrorists with your chakram and grenades, eat hot dogs for health, and locate contacts to help take down bosses. Developed by Programancer, who previously worked on Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit, and is knee-deep in active work on The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest.

After serving a lengthy stint on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo Switch eShop, Prison City will soon be breaking out of its digital penitentiary courtesy of Limited Run Games. A physical edition of the game will be available to pre-order on PS5 and Nintendo Switch starting next Tuesday, February 17, through March 22 and will include a reversible cover, manual, and 3 Crazy Caps.

Key features in the update:

There are now two versions of DCP Headquarters (DCP2): COMPACT and SPRAWLING. COMPACT is the default on Easy and Modern, while SPRAWLING is the original gauntlet intended for veteran players

Hal can now perform a new Special Attack with his chakram—activated using a directional button.

Hal can jump mid-slide or attack while sliding.

Input switching is now done on any press of a desired input (on keyboard or controller).
