Quarterstaff: The Tomb of Setmoth – Rediscovering the Lost PC Version of an RPG Classic

“Quarterstaff: The Tomb of Setmoth,” a role-playing game developed for the Apple Macintosh in 1988 by Scott Schmitz and Ken Updike, combines text-based adventure with graphical elements. Published by Infocom, it garnered praise for its innovative text entry and dynamic maps but failed to expand to other platforms due to poor sales, leaving the PC and Apple II GS versions unreleased. In September 2024, archivist Ken Van Mersbergen recovered the lost PC version, which was nearly in beta testing before its cancellation. This version is now available on archive.org, preserving an important piece of gaming history for enthusiasts and researchers.

I'm Mubarak AlSabah, born in '87, and I'm a big fan of retro games. I’ve been gaming since '93, so it's been a lifelong passion for me. Collecting retro games is my favorite hobby, and I have a great collection that takes you back in time. In addition to gaming, I also have 830+ premium domain names, which is another hobby that I love just as much. I started collecting domains in '97, combining my interest in the digital world with my love for nostalgic gaming.
