R-Type DX, a game that combines the original R-Type with its sequel, R-Type II, was first released on Game Boy Color back in 1999, recently getting a PC port that also restored the original arcade soundtrack, which was released under the title ‘R-Type DX: Music Encore,’ as we reported previously.
And now, thanks to Limited Run Games and RetroBit, R-Type DX is returning home to the Game Boy Color, with an all-new physical cartridge release.
In addition to full versions of both R-Type and R-Type II, R-Type DX also features ‘R-Type DX Mode’, which is an exclusive continuous campaign that seamlessly merges both titles into a single, cohesive experience, complete with on-the-fly battery saves.
This new physical release of R-Type DX wil offer a total of five game modes:
R-Type (Classic Monochrome): The original 1991 Game Boy port, fully playable on original Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware.
R-Type II (Classic Monochrome): The 1992 Game Boy sequel port, fully playable on original Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware.
R-Type (Color-Enhanced): Remastered edition featuring full color palettes, updated animations, and redrawn sprites. Playable on Game Boy Color only.
R-Type II (Color-Enhanced): Remastered edition enhanced for Game Boy Color displays and improved clarity. Playable on Game Boy Color only.
R-Type DX Mode. Playable on Game Boy Color only.
R-Type DX is set to be released on a special ‘Cosmic cartridge’ and it will be compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color.
In addition to the physical re-release of the game, Limited Run Games will also be issuing the R-Type DX original soundtrack on both CD and vinyl LP.
The CD version will include a full-color booklet featuring an exclusive cover artwork by Paul “Otaking” Johnson, and an exclusive interview with producer Nobuhiro Yoshikawa.
The vinyl version will be a 12″ LP that features R-Type DX: Music Encore on side A, and the original BGM on side B. It will be available on ‘Cosmic vinyl’, housed in a collector gatefold jacket with a producer interview insert.
