Retro-inspired first person puzzler Hark the Ghoul has a new demo

Hark the Ghoul is a new retro-inspired first-person dungeon crawler that has a new demo to try following its initial demo release in October 2024. The demo has over 150 positive reviews on Steam, and developer Kwalee Ltd has since added more content in the form of a whole new area to explore. A new trailer also showcases a level flythrough introducing the new area, the Cerulean Sluice, a glowing, mycelium-infused world teeming with aggressive automatons and a cast of strange characters, each with their own mysterious motives.

The game has been described as Souls-like and combines freeform traversal with expressive combat in a charming, lore-rich world. It also combines creative immersive problem-solving, non-linear exploration, and a melancholic and striking world. Publisher Deep Denizens said in a press statement. “Explore the somber streets of Clergerac and the depths underneath, find all sorts of useful equipment, and cleverly combine their uses to make your own path through the world.”

In Hark the Goul, players explore a myriad of seamlessly interconnected zones as they descend the bowels of the earth and uncover its secrets. They will also use swords, whips, pistols, cannons, artifacts and employ magic to tear their way through enemies. It is all wrapped up in a compelling world that is lovingly rendered in a retro-modern low-poly style that includes customizable retro effects.
