It was Sonic’s 35th anniversary yesterday, and there was plenty of celebration across social media from Sega. There was also a surprise drop of the Blue Blur‘s latest racing game, Crossworlds, getting a shadow drop on Switch 2, but more importantly for retro fans, a new release of the first two outings on Genesis. Prolific merch slinger and game publisher iam8bit has teamed with Sega to bring a new release of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 to the Genesis in special carts that pay homage to the original product.
Both are available for pre-order now, with shipping expected to start later in 2026. In a press statement, iam8bit said. “The story of Sonic the Hedgehog is the story of the 1990s. Born of a brilliant union between cutting-edge console technology and of-the-era super radical attitude, Sonic’s iconic design and in-your-face personality quickly solidified him as a bona fide pop culture icon, a flagbearer of everything hip, cool, and, of course, fast.”
While these are undoubtedly cool, the price tag is high at $100 each, with many fans around the world reporting that shipping outside the US raises the cost to over $150. We’re sure many hardcore fans will be digging deep into their wallets, and it’s great to see the original Sonic games get such love. In more Sonic 35th anniversary news, we also reported that Humble Bumble is offering a great deal on digital comics.
