We first reported on SoulQuest, a side-scrolling action title from developer SoulBlade Studio and publisher indie.io, when the news of the Steam release was announced. Now, SoulQuest is available on Switch, priced at $19.99 with an early bird discount running during the launch. The game uses a clever scoring system that ranks each encounter from F to SSS and judges the overall performance of combos.
The system encourages players to improve rather than just throw out the same moves over and over. According to the developer, “the inputs are simple enough to understand in a minute. Stringing them into something the game will actually reward takes considerably longer, and the hardest difficulties exist for players who want the gods to be a genuine problem”. It certainly does sound like there is a lot of depth to the overall gameplay.
The story in SoulQuest draws on the rich legacy of Celtic folklore and Arthurian myths, combining them with a crisp retro aesthetic and medieval-inspired soundtrack for an unforgettable experience across iconic areas of the British Isles. Thanks to frame-perfect animations and responsive controls, players add their own beauty to the landscape, cutting through enemies using a flurry of moves that are as beautiful as they are effective at dispatching them.
