ARPG Classic Terranigma Getting The Remaster Treatment Next Year

Terranigma is a Super Nintendo action RPG from developer Quintet originally released in 1995 in Japan, before being localised for European and Australian audiences in 1996. It’s notable for never receiving a North American release, but following an announcement on this week’s Pixel Arcadia showcase, publisher Clear River Games is righting that wrong. Penciled in for a 2027 release, the remaster will be ported to Switch, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.

In a press statement, Clear River Games said. “Adored by media and fans alike, Terranigma features fast-paced gameplay that’s simple to pick up and play for gamers of all levels. With gorgeous pixel art graphics and soulfully melancholic music, this new edition of the classic game thoughtfully adds to the original masterpiece, bringing a host of upgrades, tweaks, and bonus features designed to make the best, better still and provide an ideal point of entry for modern gamers.”

The work to bring Terranigma to modern audiences has been supported by Kamui Fujiwara, the original game’s artist, who also commented on the announcement of the new version. “30 years ago, Terranigma was released on the SNES. Now, at long last it will be available once again on console and PC, digital and physical. It may not be exactly the same as it was back then, but I’m sincerely delighted about it making its return to the current gaming environment.”

Speaking about his time working on the original, Fujiwara also said. “During the original’s development, I was involved with designing not only the characters, but the world too, and even some of the game settings as well. I hope the themes of god and humanity, creation and destruction, and the atmosphere of the world itself resonate with today’s players too. Not as a relic of the past, but as a living, breathing work. This moment has been long awaited, and now it is finally here. I hope you will enjoy it with all your heart.”
