Toy Story 3 Complete Edition Steam Review

Toy Story 3 Complete Edition Steam Review

It was great to hear about Toy Story 3 getting a remaster earlier this year, and now we’ve had a chance to try the Steam port for ourselves. It’s out on October 15th, 2026, for Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, and coincides with the release of Toy Story: Retro Roundup!, which we’ve also reviewed this week. Toy Story 3 is a remaster of the original movie tie-in game released in 2010 for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC. It includes all the original modes as well as enhanced resolution and performance for modern systems. The price for a digital copy is $24.99, while a physical or digital pack, containing both new Toy Story releases, is also available for $39.99.

For our review, we completed the main game, which is loosely based on the film, and spent about three hours in the sandbox mode called Woody’s Roundup. Both modes are available once you finish the first level, a rootin’ tootin’ dash to save hostages on a train heist in the Wild West. Right from the off, Toy Story 3 sticks true to the source material; we had tingles up our spines as various jingles and tunes from the movies kicked in at various times. There is also some great voice acting from artists that sound just like the real thing, and you’ll hear all sorts of quotes from the movies in places.

The main game won’t take all that long to complete; this is a game aimed at younger gamers, after all, but the fun factor never lets up throughout. Each level has sections where different mechanics are used to progress the story and adventures of Buzz, Woody, and Jessie, all of whom have unique moves and attributes. Most of the levels in Toy Story 3 play out like traditional 3D platforming where you’ll switch between the three main characters to achieve tasks that progress the sections. There are also plenty of other levels, such as Buzz’s video game, where it plays much more like an action title, and even an arcade game in places.

Toy Story 3 is filled with variety, and gameplay features span so many genres. One moment you’re racing around on an RC car, the next you’re jetpacking through space as Buzz Lightyear of Star Command! No matter what actions or gameplay mechanics are in play, everything feels solid and so well laid out and explained. This doesn’t feel like a game released 16 years ago, and that is a testament to the excellent game design from start to finish. If we’re being completely honest, there were a few moments during the main game where the controls felt a little awkward or just not as sharp as we’d expect from today, but this is a small gripe.

Although the main story mode ends all too quickly, the fun with it isn’t over, as you’ll need to replay levels to find all the secret cards and extras that unlock more things to use in the sandbox mode. Even for a kids’ game, getting every secret is quite tough and requires a lot of exploring to every nook and cranny in every level. Then, once you find out where they are hiding, many require a small puzzle or tough platforming section to be conquered. It certainly feels like good value and will take some time to finish the main mode.

You then just have the video section to enjoy, which shows all the cutscenes from the main Toy Story 3 game, and the very enjoyable Woody’s Roundup. In this sidequest of sorts, you control one of the three characters to complete little missions in a make-believe world of Woody. There is so much to do here, and a light story plays out the more you complete missions. Most of the quests are mostly fetching things or just exploring, but towards the end of this mode, there are some tough time challenges and platforming areas to beat.

Toy Story 3 just feels so special. It was one of the best games of 2010 and still feels magical today. The fun isn’t just for the kids either, as adults who’ve enjoyed the films will love the references and quotes as well as the imaginary play that only a video game adaptation could conjure. It’s also fun just exploring and pretending to be Woody, or Buzz, or Jessie. A lot of the magic in Toy Story 3 is down to the clever design and the freedom on offer to play your way.

Overall, Toy Story 3 feels like a must-play for platforming fans due to the high quality of the graphics, sound, and level design. It’s also the best way to enjoy the world of Toy Story beyond the films and is fun for the whole family. This is a brilliant game that deserves this remaster, and Digital Eclipse has done an excellent job polishing up this masterpiece. There is always the worry with these kinds of projects that the magic gets lost, but it’s here as strong as it was 16 years ago. Throughly recommended.
