Yesterday (July 22, 2006), Microsoft launched what it’s calling, “XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC.”
Yes, yes, WE know that isn’t technically what “backward compatibility” means, but it’s how Microsoft is referring to it, so we’re going with it, and don’t “@” us!
Anyway, slightly questionable nomenclature aside, XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC aims to make games released on the original XBOX playable not only on PC, but also on handheld devices such as the ROG XBOX Ally and XBOX Ally X.
Before you get too excited about playing the hundreds of games released for the original XBOX on your PC, we must point out that currently a mere four XBOX titles are supported, which are: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and, Fuzion Frenzy.
If you don’t yet own these four XBOX games, all four are now available to purchase on PC, and all four are also included on all Game Pass plans. If you do already own the games digitally on XBOX, you can now also play them on PC or handheld for no extra charge via the XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming services.
XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC was announced on the official XBOX blog, XBOX Wire, where it also states that when played on PC, the games will benefit from new features such as: “4x resolution upscaling, enhanced anti-aliasing, and more, adding that: “these games also include customizable language and audio settings.” Microsoft also says that it will be adding Achievements to the games on XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC at a later date.
