Doom has been seen running on whole host of unexpected formats in recent years, such as Doom in PDF format, on which we previously reported, so the game getting a port to an older home computer may not seem as surprising as it once would have, but surely running Doom is beyond the capabilities of the 16-bit Atari ST home computer? Homebrew coder Jonas Eschenburg thinks not, and is working on a fan port of John Carmack and John Romero’s seminal first-person shooter for the machine.
So far, Jonas Eschenburg has managed to get his Atari ST fan port of Doom running on an emulated Atari ST with a 32MHz Motorola 68060, and he is currently working on optimizing the code for Doom on Atari ST in order to get it running on actual Atari ST hardware. You can follow Jonas Eschenburg on X to keep track of his progress.
We’re sure you don’t need us to tell you that Doom was first released on PC in 1993, and it went on to become one of the biggest video games franchises of all time, but despite receiving a surprisingly good port to the 16-bit SNES console, Doom was released that bit too late to receive ports to to 16-bit home computers, such as the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST, hence Jonas Eschenburg’s attempt to port it to the Atari ST now.
