It was with great surprise to the Dreamcast community that British retro firm 8BitMods announced the VMUPro recently. The new device is aiming to be “the last visual memory card you’ll ever need for your Dreamcast. But it’s not just for your Dreamcast.” The excellent-looking device is available to pre-order from 6pm on the 15th May 2025 and boasts an impressive array of features that go way beyond the standard uses of a traditional VMU.

Firstly, the VMUPro does all the usual things, such as saving your games and having the ability to download VMU minigames from Dreamcast discs. The difference is that save games will now be stored on a microSD card up to 2TB, which equates to over 8,000 individual VMU units. Furthermore, save games can be backed up thanks to a simple WiFi system that also has other functions such as stats on playing time and artwork saves.

The best part, though, is that the VMUPro also acts as an emulator to play 8-bit consoles on the backlit IPS TFT 16-bit colour display. This essentially makes it a handy little drive to play Game Boy & Game Boy Color, NES, Game Gear and Master System on the go. While this may be seen as a gimmick by some, given the screen and button size, this is quite an impressive addition that certainly makes it worth the £75 asking price.

The VMUPro is also available in a range of colours emulating the colour range from the original VMU and also has MP3 functionality with Bluetooth, so it can work as a music box on the go. Lastly, 8BitMods has confirmed that future features are in the works that will add more functionality.
