Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns Coming this August

One of the titles shown during yesterday’s Future Games Show Summer Showcase at Summer Game Fest was Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the original Amiga version of  Defender of the Crown, the game has been rebuilt from the ground up, in order to bring the Saxon-Norman conflict to a new audience with modernized visuals, refined mechanics, and even a new roguelite mode.

The re-imagined game, titled Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns has been developed by Black Tower Basement, and it will be published by Nordcurrent Labs on August 13, 2026, on PC (Steam and GOG), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The remake will include three modes: Retro Mode, Classic Mode, and Kingdom Mode. Perhaps of most interest to readers of this site, Retro Mode allows players to experience the original1986 Cinemaware Amiga version of the game, Classic Mode serves as a modern reimagining with a new visual identity and smoother mechanics. Kingdom Mode is a roguelite deck-builder with dice-based combat set in the world of Defender of the Crown. To unite the kingdom, players must fight across the map and defeat three enemy lords in their strongholds while facing brigands, rogues, and Norman forces along the way.

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns will be the first Defender of the Crown game to be released for nearly 20 years, since 2007’s Defender of the Crown: Heroes Live Forever on PC.

As we reported previously, the original Amiga version of Defender of the Crown, and its sequel, will also  be included on Retro Games Ltd.’s forthcoming THEA1200 plug and play Amiga device.
