GunCrypt is a new pixel art roguelike currently in development from Halfbrick Studios. The game is due to be released on Steam at a later date, but a new demo has launched that gives retro gamers a glimpse of what they can expect. The game isn’t the usual top-down shooter roguelike that relies on constantly upgrading guns to advance. In GunCrypt, the player’s gun magazine is the star and allows them to put the different bullets in certain orders to build up damage.
The new demo for GunCrypt has been part of the latest Steam Next Fest and covers two floors of the full game, plus the town hub. The full game will descend to four floors deep, which become increasingly frantic. Rather than collecting regular ammo, players discover magical and mysterious bullets forged by Billy the Bulletsmith and scattered throughout the crypt. These bullets are arranged by the player inside the deputy’s magazine, firing in sequence and combining in cunningly creative ways.
The Crypt is where the adventure begins, presenting the player with crumbling stone corridors, ancient burial chambers, and a healthy population of undead that would rather the deputy turned around and went home. Skeletons, Watchers, and Blobfish make their home here. The floor ends with a boss encounter: The Beholder or The Bone Collector, depending on the run.
