Corsair Cove Steam First Impressions

Corsair Cove is a new real-time strategy title from developer Limbic Entertainment and publisher Hooded Horse. It will be released on Steam on July 31st, 2026, and we’ve played through the first few hours of this excellent pirate sim. The game is set in the golden age of piracy, when legends were forged, and the pirates were constantly battling the navies of the world. In Corsair Cove, the story revolves around a group of pirates stranded on an island as they try to build a settlement and construct ships to take the fight back to the Crown’s forces.

Before we get into our overall thoughts on Corsair Cove, it’s worth mentioning that we were impressed with how detailed the gameplay is. Unlike most city-building games, where just placing things in a grid means they work, you must think about connections for workers to use, supplies for the various industries, and many other aspects. This certainly isn’t a game for casual fans of the genre; you’ll need to be constantly checking that your pirate city is functioning correctly and that the inhabitants are happy.

It’s this variety and balance to Corsair Cove that makes it such a compelling game. You’ll be trying to put down an uprising of an unruly mob one minute, then fending off an attack from the Crown. Suddenly, a load of drifters arrive and need to be dealt with, and so the process of constantly keeping up with everything continues. It makes this an edge-of-your-seat kind of RTS, and it’s refreshing to have a game of this nature require such constant attention. There is no just sitting back and waiting for your gold to grow; there is always something happening.

With all this going on in the town, you still need to find time to take to the seas after crafting ships. This is the other main gameplay area of the game where turn-based sea battles take place using a deck of cards. Each turn, a new batch of cards is dealt, and you need to use them as effectively as possible with the limited action points. These battles can be tough, and you’ll need to plan carefully how to navigate them. The rewards for exploring and attacking other ships can be great and are one of the more fun aspects of Corsair Cove.

We were also impressed with the presentation in Corsair Cove and were delighted to be able to zoom right in and see the little pirates working away in the city, or zoom right out and get a god-like view of the seven seas and the places we would want to explore as the game progressed. The detail on the buildings and ships is the best part, and there are also some excellent cutscenes between chapters of the story that bring to life the pirate legend unfolding throughout.

Overall, Corsair Cove is a brilliantly detailed and polished strategy title that will please those looking for something very in-depth and challenging. Our only real niggle was when trying to connect buildings in the city or create pathways for workers; this didn’t always work correctly, and we’d end up with a mess of routes. This was a tiny issue in the big picture, though, and everything else in the game ran very smoothly. This is a high-quality game that will please fans of the genre and provide hours of entertainment.
