Yes, you did read that correctly, and yes, you’re right in thinking that Super Mario Land is already a Game Boy game, but the Game Boy homebrew developer 2bit Crook, who also goes by the handle of Game Boy Demakes has recreated the game’s first level in the style of its sequel, Super Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins.
As you probably know, while the original Super Mario Land is, quite rightly, considered to be one of the very best games that was ever released for the Game Boy, however, as a launch title, at the time it was developed, developers hadn’t yet fully mastered how to squeeze the most from Nintendo’s diminutive monochromatic marvel, so the game looks a little on the primitive side compared to some of the titles that followed, such as -yes – Super Mario Land’s sequel, which boasted vastly superior graphics to its predecessor, so Game Boy Demakes has reimagined the first level of the earlier game in the style of its sequel, creating what he has dubbed “Super Mario Land 1 + ½”.
This is actually Game Boy Demakes’ second attempt at reimagining Super Mario Land in the style of its sequel, as it was also the very first Game Boy reimagining on which he worked, a decade ago, though in the intervening years, Game Boy Demakes has honed his craft, when producing Game Boy re-imaginings of modern games such as Cuphead, Castle Crashers and Plants vs. Zombies, on which we have reported previously.
This isn’t the only remake of Super Mario Land currently on the homebrew scene. As we reported earlier this week, a Game Boy Advance port of the game is also in development.
Maybe one day Game Boy Demakes will remake the whole of Super Mario Land in the style of its sequel, but for now, you can enjoy first level of “Super Mario Land 1 + ½” in your browser or download its Game Boy ROM via itch.io.
