Oldschool FPS Beneath Gets New Retro Mode Update

Beneath

We first reported on Beneath, a new retro-inspired FPS, on its release in October on Steam and consoles. Now developer Camel 101, alongside publisher Wired Productions, has released the first free update to its classic boomer shooter. The new Retro Mode has been described as “a nostalgic visual overhaul” that harks back to the glory days of late-90s first-person shooters. The new trailer shows the beautifully crafted low-res presentation that will spark players’ nostalgia.

In a press statement, Wired Productions said. “Serving cutting-edge visuals from the year 1998, Retro Mode keeps the same combat and suffocating deep-sea dread but wraps it all in glorious low resolution. Think CRT glow, chunky pixels, and that “sitting cross-legged in front of the TV at midnight” energy. It gives Beneath’s research stations a whole new flavour and a surprising hit of charm. Low-res horror hits harder when every shadow hides something, and every encounter is about survival, not speed.”

The new road is just the start of Beneath’s 2026 roadmap for updates. The developer is planning lots of new content for the upcoming year, including a second mode for those who have already finished the main game. In the meantime, the festive season just went retro for Beneath.
