Darkenstein 3D is a retro-styled FPS on which we previously reported, and it was released on Steam today, as a free to own title.
Or, as publisher Microprose puts it: “the bullets are back, the Nazis are doomed, and your dog still needs saving. Darkenstein 3D, the fast-paced retro shooter inspired by Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, is officially launching TODAY – completely free to own on Steam.”
Microprose goes on to add that Darkensein 3D has been “created by a solo developer as a full-blown love letter to the golden age of shooters, reviving everything fans miss about ‘90s FPS action: fast movement, tight gunplay, secrets in every corner, and explosions that feel right.”
In Darkenstein 3D, the player assumes the role of “the Hobo Guy, a furious drifter trapped behind enemy lines in 1940s Germany. Your mission: blast your way through 13 handcrafted levels, tear through waves of Axis soldiers, uncover alien conspiracies, and rescue your kidnapped dog, Gunther.”
“Armed with shotguns, explosives, and pure spite, you’ll fight your way through castles, bunkers, and secret labs – all drenched in blood, debris, and the echoes of chaotic gunfire. And because no good revenge story is complete without backup, you won’t be fighting alone. Your vicious rat companion is here to help – or at least, to bite ankles and cause total mayhem.”
Published by Mixroprose, Darkenstein 3D is out now on Steam, as a free download.
