L’Empereur is this week’s release in Hamster Corporation’s Console Archives line of emulated retro console titles for modern formats, following last week’s release of Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, on which we reported previously.
This week’s Console Archives title, L’Empereur, is a turn-based strategy game that was originally released by Koei for the NES in 1991, as well as appearing on a number of other formats, such as PC (MS-DOS), MSX, and PC-88, though the Console Archives version of the game is the NES version, even if, as usual, Hamster Corporation is rather coy about that, describing the game’s format of origin simply as “an 8-bit home console,” in order to avoid trademark infringement.
Hamster Corporation describes L’Empereur as follows: “this simulation game puts you in the shoes of the legendary Napoléon, aiming to save France from crisis, become emperor, and unify Europe, carrying the hopes of the people. Overcome the challenges of realistic HEX-based warfare, requiring consideration of varying topography and bridge construction, and develop sharp diplomatic strategies by your genius military tactics and political power.”
The Console Archives version of L’Empereur began its reign over modern formats from today (June 11, 2026) on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, priced at $7.99 USD or local equivalent.
