Regular readers will know that we love new games for old consoles, and Sovietborgs, a new Mega Drive shooter from developer Retro Sumus, fits the bill perfectly. Retro Sumus has previously released the excellent Xenocider on Dreamcast and has now moved on to building this upcoming Mega Drive title. We took a look at a very early build back in November 2024 and felt that the way the game was progressing looked very promising. We’ve now been sent the latest build and will bring you an update on our thoughts in June 2025.

In the meantime, there have been some exciting developments on the project. The most important being that Retro Sumus has announced that Sovietborgs will be up for a crowdfunding campaign on 25th June 2025. We also have confirmation that Sovietborgs will be released for Mega Drive, Neo Geo, Dreamcast, and MS-DOS. There was also a final confirmation that Retro Sumus doesn’t plan to release the communist-inspired shooter on modern platforms.

There is also a new trailer to commemorate the announcement of the crowdfunding project date. The new footage gives a very short glimpse of some new areas not seen before in the game, as well as a few seconds of what appears to be a boss fight.
