After 45 years Mystery House is making a comeback

It’s been 45 years since Mystery House was released for the Apple II. The game, illustrated by Roberta Williams and programmed by Ken Williams, is recognised as the first graphical adventure title and helped create the point-and-click genre that was very popular during the 80s and 90s. Now, developers Guillotine Games, with the help of publishers MMMera, are bringing the PC classic back in a new remaster title due for release in late 2025.

The new Mystery House will be launched on Steam and will be rebuilt as a fully immersive 3D horror adventure that will include a PCVR version. The developers aim to “bring the original’s groundbreaking spirit into the modern era”. In a statement, Marcus Mera of Guillotine Games said, “Mystery House isn’t just a remake, it’s a resurrection. We’re honouring the legacy of Ken and Roberta Williams while giving fans something entirely new to explore.”

The new trailer accompanying the announcement gives us a glimpse of the style the new game is going for, featuring an 80s synth soundtrack and grainy VHS-like footage to create a spooky and mysterious feel to proceedings. The game is set in an abandoned mansion where eight friends are enjoying a game night, but it quickly turns into a nightmare where “something, or someone, doesn’t want them to leave alive”. Those interested can wishlist on Steam now, and we’ll be sure to keep tabs on this exciting remake.
