The NES version of Life Force, the 1987 Gradius Spin off also known as Salamander, has received a fan port to the SNES from the ROM hacker Rumbleminze, who promises that his new SNES fan port of Life Force has “no sprite flicker,” “no slowdown,” “eight palettes”, “difficulty selection”, “optional lives adjustment,” and a CD-quality soundtrack.”
Salamander first blasted its way into Japanese arcades in 1986, released by Konmai, with the NES and Famicom ports (retitled Life Force in the West) following a year later, in 1987. As we previously reported, the game will also be featured on the forthcoming Gradius Origins collection, which is due to be released on PC and consoles this August.
You can download Rubleminze’s native SNES port of the NES version of Life Force from this link. What’s more, Rumblemize always makes his ports open source, so you can also access the hex and assembly code of the port from Github.
In addition to his new Life Force SNES port, Rumbleminze has also previously ported a number of other NES games to SNES, including Super Super Dodgeball, Rygar, Double Dragon II, Double Dragon, Color Dinosaur, Chip ‘n’; Dale Rescue Rangers, Blaster Master, and Kid Icarus, all of which are available via Archive.org.
