We’ve been keeping an eye on the Game Boy homebrew coder Shane McCafferty’s OutRun GB project ever since we reported on its announcement back in April, reporting last week that work on the port was now complete, and now, McCafferty’s finished version of OutRun GB for Game Boy Color is available to download for free from itch.io, with a version of the game available for Game Boy Color, and another version available for Analogue Pocket. In a post made on X, Shane McCafferty promises that OutRun GB offers “All the tracks, all the music, all the wind in your hair!”
OutRun was originally released into arcades by Sega nearly 40 years ago, back in 1986, and while the game has received official conversions for a plethora of home formats, the Game Boy wasn’t among them, but OutRun GB, Shane McCafferty’s new homebrew fan port of OutRun for Game Boy Color, certainly fills that gap.
The idea to bring OutRun to Game Boy came to Shane McCafferty when he was developing his original Game Boy racer, Hero GP, on which we have previously reported, and now this idea has become a reality that can now be played by Game Boy Color and OutRun fans everywhere!
