Switchblade fan port blasts onto Amstrad PCW

Switchblade is a run ‘n’gun game that was originally released by British software house Gremlin Graphics in 1989 for the 16-bit Atari ST home computer, before being ported to a number of other 8-bit and 16-bit home computer formats, and now, some 37 years after its original release, Switchblade has been ported to yet another microcomputer format, namely the Amstrad PCW, albeit via an unofficial fan port of the game.

The Amstrad PCW is a rather unusual machine to receive a port of an action game such as Switchblade, as the machine was primarily used for word processing, and following its release in 1985, it was most commonly found in businesses and schools throughout the 1980s and 1990s, until the machine was eventually discontinued in 1998.

The Amstrad PCW port of Switchblade was developed by Enrique G. Galvez, who released the game onto itch.io yesterday (July 3, 2026), where you can download the game on a name your own price basis.

Switchblade isn’t the first unlikely game to receive a fan port to the Amstrad PCW from Enrique G. Galvez, as he has previously created fan ports of games such as The New Zealand Story, Jon Ritman’s 8-bit isometric Batman game, and Barbarian, amongst others, to the machine.

My love of gaming began way back in 1986 with the ZX Spectrum, before becoming a lifelong Nintendo fan in 1990 with the Game Boy. And although I keep up with modern gaming, we all know you can't beat retro classics (or maybe I'm just old!) https://x.com/paultwist
