Virtua Agent is a new demake of the Sega arcade/Saturn classic shooter Virtua Cop for the NES.
The game claims to be: “the Only Demake Playable with the NES Zapper on Original hardware,” and it claims to offer: “the iconic opening mission originally seen on the Sega Saturn now transformed into a pixel-perfect NES game.”
And while Virtua Agent can, indeed, be played using the NES Zapper, should you prefer, the game can also be played with a regular NES controller, too.
Virtua Agent has been developed by a homebrew coder going by the name of The RetroBro, who has previously developed other NES homebrew titles such as the sci-fi Metroidvania Aethos and the spooky platform game Hobo Albo’s Halloween Adsventure.
The NES ROM of Virtua Agent is available now as a free download via itch.io.
The ROM can be played using a NES emulator, or on original NES hardware using an Everdrive device.
The game from which Virtua Agent draws its inspiration, Sega’s Virtua Cop, was originally released in arcades in 1994, before receiving a well-received Sega Saturn port in 1995, eventually making its way onto PC under the title Virtua Squad in 1996. For obvious reasons, the game never received an official NES port, but if it had done, it might’ve looked and played something like Virtua Agent!
