We were fortunate to interview the creators of Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary recently, and with the game’s upcoming release on 24th July 2025, developer BBG Entertainment has a few updates. Firstly, a brand new gameplay video shows off two levels in the game and how to beat them. It also gives anyone who hasn’t yet played the demo a glimpse of what can be expected from Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary.
This latest title in the long-running series will feature 180 all-new Boulder Dash levels and new gameplay elements not seen before. Fans can also make their own levels and share them with other players for endless fun and longevity. Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary will also include a new soundtrack from veteran composer Chris Hülsbeck and sport a new visual style that looks fresh while keeping in tune with the series’ roots.
In further news, celebrating 40 years of Boulder Dash, the team took the game to the Pixel Awards Europe in Warsaw. The event took place on the 7th June 2025, and BBG Entertainment put on a contest called the Boulder Dash Master Challenge. The contest was won by Adam Strzelczyk, with several runners-up also being recognised for their efforts. It wasn’t just a win on the day for Adam, as his glorious victory now allows him to represent Poland in the upcoming Boulder Dash World Championship being held at this year’s gamescom event in Cologne.
The final piece of Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary news is that not only did it have a great showing at the Pixel Awards Europe with the contest, but it won an award in the Retro Roots category. Speaking about the award, BBG Entertainment said. “We pursued two goals: Firstly, we wanted to bring the first three parts, Boulder Dash I, II, and III, to life as faithfully as possible on current machines. Secondly, we wanted to spice up the classic gameplay with contemporary visuals and suitable new ideas such as growing walls, slime, an enemy generator, eggs, and other things.”
They continued with. “All in all, Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary is certainly the most comprehensive game in the series of all time: The first three games in the original Commodore and Atari look, more than a hundred brand new levels in a new look, and all tested and approved by the best Boulder Dash players worldwide. On top, we have integrated a level editor which allows the users to create, play, and share all these levels to Boulder Dash players worldwide, plus stunning music and sounds from Chris Hülsbeck.”
