Good news for import PS1 fans, as anime-inspired Geppy-X is heading to modern consoles and PC on July 16th, 2026. Previously released in 1999 on PlayStation, only in Japan, this ambitious project is a horizontally scrolling shooter set in a world that pays homage to the classic mecha anime of the 1970s. Built at the height of the late-90s CD-ROM boom, the original PlayStation release spanned four discs. It featured over 8,000 hand-drawn animation frames, truly an unprecedented production scale for a 2D shooter.
Developer Bliss Brain is remastering the original game with the original Betacam master tapes getting re-digitized, modern upscaling that enhances visual clarity, and the animation has been fully restored to its original 24 frames per second. As well as the modern upgrades to the presentation, the gameplay has had a facelift too. The original arcade-style difficulty remains intact, but now supported by modern quality-of-life enhancements, including a rewind function, rapid fire option, quick save, CRT filter mode, and achievements.
In a press statement, the developer said. “Bliss Brain Corporation proudly announces the worldwide release of 70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X Hi-Res Remastered Edition, launching July 16, 2026, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, and Steam.”
