Offbeat is a new pixel art music production simulator from developer Whetstone Games and publisher Pantaloon. It has been announced for Steam and will launch into early access next year. Offbeat is a “music-tycoon game meets real audio production tool”, according to the publisher, and will enable players to “live out your fantasies of being a musician by playing as a jobbing composer”.
During the game, players will use all kinds of objects, at varying levels of music sophistication, to compose new tunes. Everything from garden ornaments, office supplies, and kitchen utensils can be used to make music and hopefully start growing a reputation in the scene. Interestingly, every track produced can be extracted as a WAV file for players to share like a real music track.
The idea about exporting the files is that the developers wish to “lower the barrier to entry into music production, something that can be very costly and complex, by offering a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics”. To celebrate the announcement of the game, Whetstone Games frontman Ed Sibley has released a new track, “composed and arranged entirely within Offbeat”. Those interested can check out the new track, Not Your Uncle’s Ringtone, on most popular music streaming services.
