The Colony: New Haven Chronicles is a new retro-inspired Metroidvania title from developer Aurora Games Studio. It’s out now on Steam, priced at $9.99 with a special 20% off offer for those who purchase in the first week. The developer has described The Colony: New Haven Chronicles as a “retro-styled, top-down Metroidvania putting players in the prison jumpsuit of a colonial prisoner”.
The game features a deep story with lots of lore and an upgrade system that revolves around strength, endurance, and luck. These determine the level of critical hits, health, and other stats crucial to getting further through the prison. There is also a myriad of tools that allow the player to choose the way they approach the game.
“Creating The Colony: New Haven Chronicles as a solo developer has challenged me to wear many hats, from artist to level designer, storyteller to programmer.” Says Aurora Games Studio’s Andrew Durtka, “Every aspect of the game was carefully crafted to evoke the spirit of classic adventure titles, having players lose themselves in exploration and piecing together a world shaped by mystery and decay.” He deliberately evoked the spirit of early adventure games, believing that “discovery is most rewarding when earned, where every step forward reveals something new, and the world itself tells the story.”
