This week’s release in Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives and Arcade Archives 2 lines of emulated coin-op titles has been confirmed as Taito’s 40-year-old brick breaker classic, Arkanoid, following on from last week’s release of Cyber Commando, on which we reported previously.
Of course, Arkanoid is all about using your paddle to deflect a ball into bricks in order to break them, and clear the screen, but Hamster Corporation has used slightly more florid prose to describe the game, saying that in Arkanoid you get to: “take the helm of the spacecraft “VAUS” and bounce the Energy Ball to shatter the Space Walls,” and that: “your goal is to escape from the dimension of a warped labyrinth and return to the mothership “ARKANOID.” Collecting power-up items will give you the edge you need to conquer each stage!”
As you’ll know, if you’ve read our reviews of games sch as CyberBlocker Complete Edition and Bob the Brick Breaker, we love a good brick breaker game her at RetroNews, and Arkanoid is one of the very best of the lot, so it’s great to see the 1986 arcade original of Arkanoid bouncing onto modern formats, thanks to Hamster Corporation.
The Arcade Archives version of Arkanoid will be released on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 tomorrow (May 7th, 2026), priced at $7.99 USD or local equivalent.
Meanwhile, the Arcade Archives 2 version of Arkanoid, which adds a new Time Attack mode, will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, priced at $9.99 USD or local equivalent.
As usual, purchasers of the Arcade Archives version of the game on Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4 can upgrade to the Arcade Archives 2 version on Nintendo Switch 2 or PlayStation 5 respectively for $2.99 USD or local equivalent.
