Nothing screams retro more than a traditional pixel art point-and-click adventure. Carnival, a new title from developer Beyond Booleans, is out now on Steam priced $11.99. There is also a 15% discount to enjoy at launch for those early bird players. According to the developer, the game has received high praise from players, especially for its “atmospheric design” and “compelling narrative”.
The praise for Carnival is probably most deserved, as Beyond Booleans is the solo developer behind Abscission and Anchorite, winners of a combined four AGS Awards. The developer specialises in narrative-driven adventures, blending unsettling worlds with memorable characters and striking pixel art.
Players take the role of James Maynard, a journalist on a disturbing journey through 1930s Venice, where masked traditions and ancient rituals blur the line between memory and nightmare. His investigation soon spirals into something far darker. Ancient carnival traditions hide disturbing secrets, and his narcolepsy makes every conversation, every witness encounter, every memory unreliable.
