Last month, we brought you the news that OctaRace, a Micro Machines-inspired retro racer, is in development and will be launching a crowdfunding campaign. That campaign is now live and developer Pixel Almost Perfect is asking for funds to finalise the development, cover production costs of a physical PS4 and PS5 edition, and “fund long-term support” of new features and online play.

According to publisher PixelHeart, “OctaRace is a vibrant, feel-good arcade racing game inspired by Micro Machines and the golden age of PS1 multiplayer madness”, and the game will be released on PC and consoles later in 2025. The French retro publisher also confirmed that a Steam demo is available right now, so curious retro racing fans can give the game a spin before backing the title. Even more remarkably, the demo includes solo play as well as a multiplayer mode that works locally and online.

In the press statement, PixelHeart said. “OctaRace is being crafted by a passionate duo with over a decade of experience in the video game industry. Adrien Vernotte and Ghislain Avrillon, the core team behind Pixel Almost Perfect, have worked on renowned titles at major studios like Ubisoft Montpellier, Ankama, and Artisan Studios. From Rayman Legends to Astria Ascending and Beyond Good and Evil 2.”

Further information about OctaRace includes the ability for up to eight players to join a race, the mechanics will make it both accessible and deep, vehicles can be customised, and several modes of play will be available.
